Charles will participate in the 2025 Eu-SPRI Conference on ‘Shaping Societal Futures with STI Policies’ on June 11 – 13, 2025. He will present a paper entitled “States and Markets in Innovation Research and Innovation Policy: Achievements and Challenges”. The Conference is organized by the Social Science Research Center at TU Dortmund University in Dortmund, Germany.

The abstract of the paper reads as follows:

Abstract:

This paper will constitute part of my heritage to future generations. I have chosen to address ten “themes” (or conclusions), each addressed in one of ten sections in this chapter (in addition to the introduction). I have, however, started with my conclusions on the various themes that I have addressed in  articles, books, and reports over the decades. Each conclusion constitutes the heading to one of the ten sections. Then I have presented some of the arguments. I have now done this in a much shorter form than when I reached the conclusions originally – over the decades. Therefore, much of the text below is heavily based on my earlier work to which I refer. What follows is therefore a kind of synthesis of parts of my earlier research results in a telegraphic form. In short, I will address problems that are, or have been, important as challenges in innovation research and innovation policy. Hopefully this may contribute to the development of the future “state of the art”.
